Welcome to the final installment of my local coffee shop series for 2019. Part 4 of the series includes my current top three favorite coffee shops in the greater Kansas City area and newly opened coffee shop serving a local favorite.
Overflow Coffee — Liberty
We stumbled upon this coffee shop when we were up in Liberty one afternoon. I wanted to pop into Nickel and Suede and Freckled Lamb Boutique, and my fiance wanted to go to Uppercut to pick up steaks. Feeling a little more adventurous than usual I asked the barista what he would recommend from their menu. Per his suggestion I ordered an iced Shatto mocha. Overflow makes it with Shatto chocolate milk, and I can say it was an excellent recommendation on his part. The second time we went in was to meet our potential wedding photographer for the first time (Mer is amazing and I knew I wanted her to be our photographer before we were ever engaged). I ordered some sort of apple cider spiced latte that I don't quite remember the name of, but it was also delicious. One of the things I love about this shop is they use local, handmade mugs from Clay County Creative (@claycountycreative). It's a fun personal touch that adds character to their shop. Another thing I love about this coffee shop is that they have a local organization they support every month as part of their Community Monthly Focus. Some of the organizations they've partnered with are: Safe Families for Children, Kyleigh's Gift, In the Name of Grace, and Isaac's Dream. You can see more of the organizations they've partnered with on their Instagram page @overflowcoffeekc. We always stop in when we're up north for something, so easily: 12/10.
Java Garage — West Bottoms
This has quickly become one of our favorite spots. We stop by every time we're in the West Bottoms. They recently moved to a new location at 13th and Hickory. It shares space with the Robin's Nest and is next door to Sincerely, Ellis (which happens to be my favorite place to shop of late). I usually get a vanilla latte with almond milk, but the last time we went in I opted for a seasonal special and ordered an Eggnog Latte. I was not disappointed and enjoyed sipping on my drink as we wandered around to do some Christmas shopping. There's not a lot of available seating, but it is the perfect spot to grab a warm drink while you wander through the shops. Easily a 10/10 for us since we keep coming back. Rochester Brewing & Roasting Company — Crossroads
This has quickly become one of our favorite spots. So much so that it's actually going to be our wedding venue. I'll do a whole post about our wedding vendors as it gets closer, but for now I'll just say I'm excited about the people with whom we've chosen to work. Rochester is such a fun atmosphere in the Crossroads. Not only do they roast their own coffee beans, but they brew their own beer too. The large windows, exposed (painted) brick, and wooden tables give it the perfect mix of bohemian and industrial. We have been here three times now. We stopped in right before closing time on my birthday to grab an after dinner coffee, at the beginning of November to meet with their event coordinator about the possibility of using it as our wedding venue, and then again mid-November when my sisters were in town so they could see the 1300 square foot event space. This is my favorite coffee shop in the city right now both for atmosphere, location, and the coffee: 12/10. To see pics of the event space and learn what they have on tap check them out on Instragram @rochesterkansascity.
Rehope Market and Cafe — Greenwood
This shop proudly serves The Roasterie Coffee and recently opened in Greenwood. I popped in over the weekend before Thanksgiving during a failed attempt to visit Shy Myrtle up the street. It's a local store my wedding florist, Paige's Petals (@paigespetals), recommended to pick ribbon for my bridal bouquet. Her shop sign hilariously says, "By chance or by appointment." It wasn't a wasted trip though since it gave me a chance to pop into Rehope Market and Cafe. In fact, Paige and her sister Leanne run the coffee shop. It's a cute little cafe and offers a nice gluten-free selection of pastries. My vanilla latte was delicious, and it was fun to chat with Paige for a few minutes about wedding planning. It will be fun to go back when I have time to sit and enjoy the cafe itself instead of just grabbing coffee and running. Even for a short visit, it still gets: 10/10.
